What is ePost?

ePost is a message that is transmitted as an email, but can be delivered both as an email inbox anywhere in the world, and/or be printed and delivered to a postal address anywhere in India as a letter.
How is an ePost booked?
The ePost can be booked in two ways.
(i)Booking From a Post office:
  • Customer to bring a hand written or printed message to any post office.It does not matter in which language it is written.
  • The message may be in text format, or may contain pictures or both.
  • Any number of pages can be booked. However, no page should be more than A4 in size(8.27" * 11.69").
  • The name and address, wlth PIN code, of the addressee(s) and sender should be clearly and legibly written on top of the message. Messages can be sent to Postal addresses in India only.
  • The message can also be handed over in a floppy(only text for the time being), along with clearly written address and email IDs, if any, of the addressees. Customer must ensure that the floppy is virus free. The size should be such as can be printed on an A4 size paper.
  • The post Office is not an epost centre, would scan the message and issue a reciept for the tariff.
  • In case the post office, if it is an ePost centre, it would retain the message. The payment would be in the form of postage stamps affixed on the top right of the message sheet. The Post office will deface the postage stamps with the date stamp and issue a reciept for the tariff to the customer.The Post office would put the message in a closed service envelope and send it to designated ePost Centre for further transmission electronically. Thus, ePost messages can be booked from any post office in India, though its electronic transmission will take place only from ePost Centrs, to which these post offices are attached.
(ii)Booking from Customer's Home/Office:-
  • Customer has to buy an ePost prepaid cash card. These cards can be bought from select Post Offices and other outlets in denominations of Rs.500 and 1000.
  • Customer can access the ePost portal indiapost.nic.in and register as a user. Once registered , messages can be written and easily sent by following the online instructions.
  • It is also possible noe to print a message, including text and pictures, on the official stationary, scan it and send the scanned image by ePost.
  • The message can be sent simultaneously to upto 999 addresses in one go. An address book can be created for this purpose, and this can be used later on also.
  • ePost messages can be sent to any postal addressee(s) in India and email IDs, anywhere in World.
  • Payment can be madeonline using the prepaid cash card only.  
What is the tariff for booking the ePost articles?

The tariff at present, is Rs.10per A4 size page, per addressee.Payment can be made only in cash or through ePost Cash cards.
How are ePost articles are transmitted and Delivered?
The ePost article are transmitted through internet llike an email. If the artuicles are addressed to an email inbox, these are delivered to that inbox.If the articles are addressed to postal addresses, these are downloaded and printed(only in black and white at present) at the ePost centres nearest to the addresses, enveloped and sent to the postal addresses like letters for delivery through post man.
Can ePost messages be sent to India from abroad?

Yes. The ePost portal can be accessed on the internet from anywhere in the world. The sender, however, has to pay by using the ePost cash card. Anybody in India can open the account for the sender and recharge it from time to time. If the sender has the password, he can access the account, and send eP{ost messagea to any postal address in India. The charges remain the same, Rs.10 per A4 size message.
Can ePost be used by businesses?

Yes, indeed. Since epost allows sending messages to multiple addresses from the office computer itself, it eliminates the need for paper and envelopes, as also the effort and expense involved in printing, folding,inserting, stamping/franking and mailing the articles.Therefore, ePost hasbeen found to be very convenient and cost effective. Some of the business uses of ePost are:
  • Sending notices of meetings/minutes/decisions etc. to shareholders, especially as the same message can be sent to 9999 addresses simultaneously and an address book can be created and used for this.
  • sending perioduic bills and statements etc.
  • For advertising to a list of customers, suppliers and
  • For internal communication with offices spread out geographically.

Even within the email user groups, it is not unusual to find that many recipients either don't upon their inbox regularly, or tend to find it tedious to remember the contents of emails for follow up etc. Many organisations, therefore, like to combine sending emails with swnding ePost to ensure better response.
